The short version
No accounts, no names, no email addresses. We keep what you post, and a few technical details needed to run the site and limit spam.
What we store
- Your posts: the question or answer text, the optional credit line you type, the university and category, and the time. Posts are public once a moderator approves them, so do not include personal details about yourself or anyone else.
- A scrambled form of your IP address: we compute a keyed hash and store that, never the IP itself. It is used to limit how many posts one person can send an hour.
- A private manage link: when you post you get a link to edit or delete your post. We store only a scrambled form of its secret, so we cannot recover it for you.
- Votes: if you vote, your browser gets a random cookie called
vs_voter. We store only a scrambled form of it with your vote, so you can have one vote per post. - Your theme choice (light or dark) is kept in your browser's local storage and never sent to us.
Who else handles data
- Cloudflare hosts the site and runs the bot check (Turnstile), which may process your IP address and device details.
- Google Fonts serves the fonts, so your browser contacts Google when a page loads.
How long we keep things
Posts stay until you delete them with your manage link or a moderator removes them. The scrambled IP value stays with the post record for as long as the post exists.
Your rights
Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you can ask to see, correct or delete personal information about you. You can edit or delete your own post any time with its manage link. If you lost the link, or you want a post about you removed, contact us and tell us which post. You may also complain to the Information Regulator.
