UJ result codes: what F7, E1 and E2 mean
F7 (undergraduate) or 7F (postgraduate) is formal exclusion. E1 and E2 are academic warnings, not exclusion.
What to do after F7: apply to appeal online through uLink within your faculty's window, with evidence. Late appeals are not accepted. If you also have a supplementary exam, write it and appeal.

Result codes after exams: what they mean and what to do next
Last checked . UJ's Academic Regulations do not contain a code table. They define the global result in words, and the letter codes below come from UJ's own warning and exclusion guide.
| Outcome or code | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | Exam mark of at least 40% and a final mark of at least 50%. Distinction is 75% or more. | Nothing. |
| Exam admission | You need a semester or year mark of at least 40% to write the exam. | Speak to your lecturer if you are refused. |
| Supplementary exam | Granted if your final mark is at least 40%, or your semester or year mark is at least 60%, or you got 50% but under 40% in the exam. Also granted if you need two semester modules (or one year module) or fewer to graduate. | Check your eligibility on uLink (you are responsible for checking). The mark is capped at 50%, there is no second supplementary, and the right lapses if unused. |
| Special or sick exam | For a missed exam with a valid reason. | Apply within 7 calendar days on uLink: Results > Sick/Deferred Exam application. No mark cap. |
| E1 / E2 | Academic warning. This is not exclusion. | Use support services and get your results up before the next assessment. |
| F7 (undergraduate) / 7F (postgraduate) | Formal exclusion. | Apply to appeal online through uLink within your faculty's window, with evidence. Late appeals are not accepted. |
| E6 / F5 (postgraduate) | Warning plus a one-year extension (E6), or final warning plus a six-month extension (F5). | Speak to your supervisor. After F5, UJ evaluates for 7F. |
UJ supplementary exam rules
From the UJ Academic Regulations and uLink guide (AR 9.5). Rules can change each year.
- Who gets one: your final mark is at least 40%, or your semester or year mark is at least 60%, or you got 50% but under 40% in the exam. You also get one if you need two semester modules (or one year module) or fewer to graduate.
- You check: your eligibility, the timetable and the venue are on uLink, and it is your job to check them.
- The mark is capped at 50%. There is no second supplementary, and the right lapses if you do not use it.
- If you are also excluded: write the supplementary and submit your appeal. Passing it does not lift the exclusion by itself.
- Missed an exam for a valid reason? That is a special or sick exam, not a supplementary. Apply within 7 calendar days on uLink (Results > Sick/Deferred Exam application). No mark cap.
Exclusion rules: failing a module twice (AR 6.6), or not being promoted for two years of study (AR 6.8). Promotion needs at least 60% of modules passed (AR 6.7).
Appeals: the Faculty Appeals Committee either allows readmission or confirms the exclusion, and its decision is final. If you are excluded but have a supplementary exam, you must write it and appeal. Passing it does not lift the exclusion automatically. Each faculty sets its own deadline; the mid-year 2025 window was 23 June to 13 July.
Conditions of readmission: valid for that year only, pass your first-semester modules, no module cancellation, attend any workshops. Breaking them means exclusion from the whole faculty.
Likely, from a 2019 internal table and possibly out of date: post-appeal result codes 1F/3F (undergraduate, November), 4F/5F (undergraduate, June), 6F/7F/8F (postgraduate, November). We have not confirmed these against current regulations.
