Result codes after exams: what they mean and what to do next

Last checked . UP has no published list of codes. Its General Academic Regulations 2026 define outcomes in words, and faculty rules add their own variants.

Outcome What it means What to do next
Pass / distinction Final mark of at least 50% (pass) or 75% (distinction). Nothing.
Exam admission You need a year or semester mark of at least 40% to write the exam. If you are refused admission, speak to your lecturer and faculty office quickly.
Supplementary exam A final mark of 40 to 49%, or 50% with the exam sub-minimum not met. You need 50% to pass and the mark is capped at 50%. Subject to faculty rules. Write the supplementary exam on the date listed.
Special exam For a missed exam with a valid reason. Apply within 3 days of the missed exam.
Chancellor's exam A once-off opportunity for students who need at most four semester modules to finish. Ask your faculty whether you qualify.
Promotion in a module A mark of at least 65%. Used for progression rules in some programmes.
Not enough credits to progress You must pass at least 60% (three-year programmes) or 66% (four to six-year programmes) of the year level's credits and finish within N+2 years, otherwise exclusion applies. Check your faculty rules at the end of the year.
Academic exclusion You may not continue because of your results. Appeal to your Faculty Appeals Committee. If it fails you can go to the Senate Review Committee on Readmission, which is final.

Faculty variants (Law, Education, Engineering and Health Sciences) change the thresholds, so read your own faculty's yearbook rules.
