Wits result codes explained: what MRNM means

Researched by the VarsityStart team from official university sources. Last checked . How we check

MRNM means you did not meet the minimum requirements of study for your degree. It is the Wits exclusion code: you may not renew your registration for the same qualification unless a Wits Readmissions Committee allows it.

What to do: appeal to WRC-1 on self-service by your faculty's deadline. MRNL (you have reached N+2) goes straight to WRC-2. MRNX and MEXL cannot be appealed.

Result codes after exams: what they mean and what to do next

Last checked . Wits shows a course result for each course and an overall result for your year. The official lists are in the Wits Readmission procedures booklet (2025/2026) and the Health Sciences student information document (2024). Other faculties' rules books give the rules but no code table, so the course codes below are confirmed for Health Sciences and likely to be used the same way elsewhere. If your faculty is different, check with your faculty office.

Course results

Code Meaning What to do next
PAS Pass. Nothing.
PABS Permission to be absent from an assessment, with a reason accepted by the faculty or Senate. The course must be repeated. Repeat the course.
FAIL Fail. Check whether you qualify for a supplementary exam (you do not if another course is below 40%).
FABS Fail, absent from the examination. Contact your faculty: exclusion is possible.
FSUB Fail, sub-minimum requirement not met. Ask your faculty about a repeat or supplementary.
FDEF Approval for a deferred exam was withdrawn (another course is below 40% and no supplementary is allowed). Contact your faculty and check your readmission position.
FNQL Fail, did not qualify to write the final assessment. Contact your faculty. The course is normally repeated.
FCLN Fail, clinical component failed. Contact your faculty.
FTH Fail, theory component failed. Contact your faculty.
FTK Fail, theory tracks (MBBCh only). Contact your faculty.
WDEF Deferred examination granted. Write the deferred exam on the date set.
WSP1 Supplementary examination granted. It is compulsory, and missing it can lead to exclusion. Write the supplementary exam.
WSP2 Supplementary exam to be marked once the deferred exam is completed. Write the deferred exam, then the supplementary.
WSP4 Supplementary examination granted because the sub-minimum was not met. Write the supplementary exam.
WINC / WAIT Course requirements incomplete, so no result yet. Complete the requirements and contact the department.
CPNC Clinical practice not complete (hours or quotas pending). Complete your hours or quotas.

Overall results

Code Meaning What to do next
PCD All courses passed. Continue to the next year of study. Register for next year.
PSC Proceed to the next year on a special curriculum. Register on the special curriculum your faculty sets.
RSC Return on a special curriculum. Register for that curriculum.
RET Return to complete the requirements of the year. Repeat the outstanding courses.
MAR Exclusion waived with conditions: return to the same year of study. Sign your conditions letter by the deadline. Breaking the conditions can mean exclusion without appeal.
XXXX Your result depends on a deferred or supplementary exam. Write the exam and check self-service.
Q / QD All qualification requirements completed (QD: with distinction). Start the graduation process.
Refer to Faculty Not a code: your results are being withheld because of an outstanding requirement (for example computer literacy or first aid), a library fine or a legal hold. Clear the hold with your faculty, the library or finance.

Readmission and exclusion codes

Code Meaning What to do next
MRNM Minimum requirements not met. You need permission to renew your registration for the same qualification. Appeal to WRC-1 on self-service (Self Service > Application for WRC) by your faculty's deadline.
MBZ Same as MRNM. It is the result if you made no representations by the due date. Contact your faculty office quickly: the window may have closed.
MRNL Minimum requirements not met and you have reached N+2. You go straight to WRC-2 (WRC-1 does not consider you).
MRNX Minimum requirements not met and you may not appeal. Final exclusion. No appeal is possible. Speak to your faculty office about other options.
MEXL Coded students may not appeal; the VC, DVC and Registrar cannot overrule it. The booklet gives no definition. No WRC appeal. Speak to your faculty office.
MRNK Exclusion waived. You may continue subject to conditions set by your home faculty. Meet the faculty's conditions.

What the committees decided

Code Meaning What to do next
M1A WRC-1 permitted you to renew your registration. Re-register.
M1C WRC-1 permitted it with conditions. Sign and meet the conditions letter.
M1E WRC-1 refused, and the case goes to WRC-2. Prepare for the WRC-2 hearing.
M2A WRC-2 permitted you to renew your registration. Re-register.
M2C WRC-2 permitted it with conditions. Sign and meet the conditions letter.
M2E / MRX WRC-2 refused permission to renew. You are excluded from the qualification. Consult your faculty office.
MVP WRC-2 referred your case to the VP and Deans Committee (VPC), which meets in January and February. Wait for the VPC decision.
MPC The VP and Deans Committee permitted renewal with conditions. Meet the conditions.
MPX The VP and Deans Committee refused permission to renew. You are excluded.

How the process works: WRC-1 can allow you to renew unconditionally, allow it on conditions, or refuse. If refused, you get a letter with reasons within three working days, and a notice of the WRC-2 hearing at least 24 hours before it. Outcomes are emailed to your Wits email on the date set by your faculty, and missing the email is not accepted as a reason for missing a hearing. Dates differ by faculty, so use the dates in the booklet.

Seen in an older (2018) Wits SRC thread and not in the 2024 list: WSP3 (a supplementary will be granted depending on the deferred exam), FTHE (failed theory) and PMNP (passed but must return to the same year). They may be out of date.
