Budgeting at NWU
- Residence (2026): roughly R33,920 to R55,080 a year depending on campus and room type, with Mahikeng and Potchefstroom at the lower end. All NWU residences are self-catering, so meals are your own cost.
- Tuition estimates exclude accommodation, transport, meals and study materials.
- NWU's own student-finance blog suggests budgeting around R1,400 to R1,600 a month for groceries, airtime, toiletries, printing, transport and socialising (an informal estimate, not an official budget).
- Off campus in Potchefstroom (2026 listings): a furnished shared room near the campus gates in Die Bult was listed at R4,650 a month and a room in an NSFAS-accredited house there at R4,600. Rooms in Potchefstroom North were advertised at R3,500 to R4,500. A bachelor flat about 7 km from campus was R3,775 plus a R3,700 deposit and a R1,000 lease fee. Agency marketing puts private student accommodation at R3,500 to R14,000 a month. A deposit is usually one month's rent. These are listings, not a survey, so check each place and whether it is NWU-accredited.
- Off-campus accommodation tips are published each year.
