Sport and societies

Researched by the VarsityStart team from official university sources. Last checked 10 October 2026. How we check

UJ lists sport clubs including athletics, basketball, cricket, e-sport, football, hockey, netball, rowing, rugby, squash and a club for students with disabilities. For most clubs you contact the club manager to learn how to join and what standard is expected. Orientation introduces the societies and sport clubs on each campus. Club membership fees apply and differ by sport. UJ's 2025 table listed hockey at R3,000 and rowing at R1,500 a year (hockey was R2,300 for the first team in 2022). We did not find a 2026 table, so ask the club.
