Getting around
TUT's bus system links the Pretoria, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa campuses (and others, including eMalahleni and Mbombela) with residences, run by contracted operators.
- Residence students: shuttles between campuses and residences are generally included in your fees.
- Non-residence students who want to use the bus must apply online and pay a once-off levy (R4,010 in 2026), debited to the student account after registration.
- NSFAS students living off campus with family or in non-accredited housing may use the bus, subject to NSFAS allowance rules.
- How to register (a third-party guide, 2025): apply online, wait for approval from the Transport Department, then collect your bus card at Campus Protection Services. Using another student's card is prohibited, and students in university residences or accredited accommodation are prioritised. Dates and steps may differ for 2026.
- We could not find a 2026 route list or timetable. Ask TUT's Transport Department.
- Gautrain: students under 25 at Gauteng institutions have had a 25% discount on the Student 10 and 44 trip cards (verified through Varsity Vibe). Since May 2025 the KlevaMova product gives 50% off train fares to students under 25 and to households earning R350,000 or less (the OR Tambo route is excluded). A 2026 Gautrain release describes the discount in terms of under-40s in the R350,000 bracket, so confirm the current rules and document list on 0800 428 87246.
- Ride-hailing: Uber offers a trip PIN, RideCheck, trusted contacts and an emergency button. Bolt offers a pick-up code, in-app audio recording and an SOS button linked to armed response. We found no student discounts for either.
