Getting around
UP provides a free bus service for students between campuses and residences. Timetables (for example Groenkloof to Hatfield, Sunnyside/Arcadia to Hatfield, Hatfield to Onderstepoort) are published on the UP website and clickUP. There is a park-and-ride at the Hillcrest campus, and the Hatfield Gautrain station is within walking distance of the Hatfield campus.
- Evenings: a 2024 report says the university bus between Hillcrest and Hatfield stops at about 20:20 on weekdays, and the City's A Re Yeng bus at about 20:00. Plan late trips ahead.
- Gautrain shuttle: a free Hatfield station shuttle was announced in 2016. We could not confirm it still runs, so ask UP Transport.
- Gautrain: students under 25 at Gauteng institutions have had a 25% discount on the Student 10 and 44 trip cards (verified through Varsity Vibe). Since May 2025 the KlevaMova product gives 50% off train fares to students under 25 and to households earning R350,000 or less (the OR Tambo route is excluded). A 2026 Gautrain release describes the discount in terms of under-40s in the R350,000 bracket, so confirm the current rules and document list on 0800 428 87246.
- Ride-hailing: Uber offers a trip PIN, RideCheck, trusted contacts and an emergency button. Bolt offers a pick-up code, in-app audio recording and an SOS button linked to armed response. We found no student discounts for either.
