Getting around
Wits runs inter-campus buses between its campuses and residences. You must show a valid Wits Student Card. Route 1 is a circuit and Route 4 runs between Main and Education campuses. The buses do not go directly to the Health Sciences campus (ride to the Education Campus and walk over), but there is weekday hospital transport for Health Sciences. A separate weekday shuttle links the Rosebank and Park Station Gautrain stations, and Rea Vaya serves the Braamfontein area. Wits Transport: transport.services@wits.ac.za, 011 717 1794.
- Rea Vaya: uses a R40 card with distance-based fares (a 2025 fare guide lists about R11.00 peak and R9.90 off-peak for trips under 5 km). We found no student discount.
- Gautrain: students under 25 at Gauteng institutions have had a 25% discount on the Student 10 and 44 trip cards (verified through Varsity Vibe). Since May 2025 the KlevaMova product gives 50% off train fares to students under 25 and to households earning R350,000 or less (the OR Tambo route is excluded). A 2026 Gautrain release describes the discount in terms of under-40s in the R350,000 bracket, so confirm the current rules and document list on 0800 428 87246.
- Ride-hailing: Uber offers a trip PIN, RideCheck, trusted contacts and an emergency button. Bolt offers a pick-up code, in-app audio recording and an SOS button linked to armed response. We found no student discounts for either.
