Safety and emergencies
- Campus Protection Unit emergency line: 046 603 8999
- 24-hour control room: 046 603 8146 or 046 603 8147
- Police: 10111
The CPU calls police or other emergency services when needed. It isn't equipped to transport injured or ill people to hospital.
- Escort at night: ask the nearest CPU guard or go to the CPU offices. Your student number is radioed in so the escort is logged. Hi-Tec guards cannot escort but can call a CPU guard. Escorts stop at the campus edge, and the CPU is not allowed to transport students to a destination on or off campus.
- Blue Route: a well-lit, patrolled route from the bottom of Prince Alfred Street past Nelson Mandela Hall, up the hill and along St Peter's Campus to Winchester House on Beaufort Street. It has 48 SOS panic buttons (yellow chevron board, red button) that signal the CPU control room.
- Off campus: Rhodes says it is not advisable to walk around Makhanda alone, particularly at night. Walk in groups, stay in well-lit areas, arrange a lift, lock doors and windows, and consider personal insurance.
- We found no Rhodes safety app.
