Disability Rights Unit
Register on Student Self-Service: open the "Special Needs" tile, start a registration for the current year, choose a diagnosis code and special need and upload proof of disability. New students need a medical document plus the DRU Medical Practitioner form, then complete the DRU Student Intake Form.
- Deadlines: apply by 23 April for June exams and by 23 August for November exams. Processing takes at least 5 to 10 working days.
- Forms: the practitioner form depends on your disability: the DRU Medical Practitioner form (all except visual), the DRU Eye Care Practitioners form (visual) or the DRU Ear and Hearing Practitioners form (hearing). Only the correct completed form is accepted. Returning students renew with a medical document plus the previous letter. Physical access (parking or drop-off) uses the DRU Physical Access Request form.
- Venues: the DRU venue is only for students using assistive technology or with special permission. Humanities, CLM, Science and EBE in-person exams use the extra-time venue, and tests are held at the main venue, booked through your lecturer. Health Sciences students speak to their lecturer or exam coordinator. For online tests or exams, tell your lecturer and course coordinator at least two weeks before and send your concession letter.
- Contacts: concession queries arlene.damons@wits.ac.za, extra-time venue bookings Alfred.Tlou@wits.ac.za, main line 011 717 1000.
